Hawksbill Sea Turtle(Eretmochelys imbricata)
The hawksbill is one of the most endangered of the sea turtles. It is a medium sized turtle with an average weight of 100 to 165 pounds. It feeds on both plant and animal life such as marine vegetation, crustaceans, mollusks and jellyfish. The shell of the hawksbill is one of the more beautiful in color and is the main reason they have been hunted to their current numbers. Their shell was the source of the popular “tortoise shell” for various products and now a trade for stuffed juveniles is having an effect as well. Efforts to reduce this hunting pressure are underway, with much progress being made in Japan, the largest importer.
The hawksbill inhabits warm water regions worldwide and is very rare in Louisiana waters.
