Welcome to the Louisiana Fishing Professor!

Using real-time data from our LA Creel surveys conducted by field biologists, the Fishing Professor tells you what kinds of fish were caught, where and when. Users can limit their search to specific types of fish and can even hone in on specific fishing areas and marinas where fish were caught or landed.

When planning for a trip that is only a couple weeks away or less, use the ‘Landings by Marina’ or the ‘Hot Zone’ map to make fishing trip decisions. You can use this tool to schedule your trip and get the best probability of catching the type of fish you want to target.

Using the ‘Hot Zones’ feature, you can find out where fish have been biting in the past five days, 14 days, 30 days or in the previous year. Then use the ‘Landings by Marina’ feature to determine where our biologists are recording these landings into our LA Creel system.

When you are planning a trip several months in advance, use the ‘Historical Recreational Fish Landings by Basin’ section at the bottom of this page to see what months have the highest probabilities of catching certain species of fish. You can determine what month and which basin will result in a successful trip.

Disclaimer : Anglers are asked during the survey process “where the majority of their fish were caught.” This may lead to some confusing results when using this tool. For example, you may notice a red drum being caught in an offshore grid (which is not legal), but this simply may be because the angler reported the majority of their fish were caught offshore, but they caught a red drum on the way back to the dock in state waters.
