The alligator snapping turtle is easily recognized by its large, heavy head and long, thick shell that is has three dorsal ridges. It differs from the common snapping turtle in that it has a rough shell that is lined with raised plates. The alligator snapping turtle is primarily carnivorous, but will eat almost anything. It has a ‘worm-like’ appendage on its tongue that it uses to attract prey.

The alligator snapping turtle is native to the southeastern United States. It can be found in almost all waters across Louisiana.
