The oyster is a filter-feeding bivalve mollusk that lives in Louisiana’s coastal waters and typically thrives in moderate salinities ranging from 5 to 15 parts per thousand (ppt). Louisiana is known for having incredible oyster fisheries. Harvesting oysters was one of the first commercial fisheries in the area. Oyster reefs are formed by the living oysters growing on top of old shells until eventually a mound is formed. This creates shelter habitat for bait fish and crustaceans, which, in turn, creates a place for game fish to feed. Redfish, speckled trout, flounder and many more inshore fish species live and feed around these natural structures.
The LDWF takes an active role in making sure these beneficial oyster reefs remain healthy and productive.
