As the name indicates, the brown shrimp has a brown color with some dark tips on the end of the tail as well as having some reddish color to their legs. They do have grooves on the side of the head below their distinct spine as well as on either side of the tail spine.

The brown shrimp makes up a large portion of the commercial shrimp catch in Louisiana and are found earlier in the year than the white shrimp. They are also an important bait for other gamefish such as redfish and trout to name a few.

Brown shrimp can be found from Massachusetts to the Yucatan in Mexico. They are extremely abundant and can grow quickly in ideal conditions.

Caught in cast nets and trawls, the brown shrimp plays an important role in the recreational and commercial fisheries in Louisiana.
