Barrier Islands are generally long narrow spits of sand that have been deposited parallel to the coast over a long expanse of geologic time. They create ecosystems associated with the islands and the sheltered bays they protect. The water flows through gaps between them and can create feeding stations for predators. Many coastal fish and fishermen enjoy the fish attracting features of many barrier islands. These islands take a beating from hurricanes who frequently rearrange the configuration of these sand deposits.
