Night Crawlers(Lumbricus terrestris)
Quick Facts
- Size Range: 14 inches
- Native Species?: Yes
These worms grow very large and are used as bait for many types of freshwater fishing. Light brown to grey, they have a fleshy collar and an iridescent sheen. They can be kept in tubs of dirt for periods of time in a cool dark place, or in the refrigerator behind the milk.
Night Crawlers are raised for bait commercially, or caught at night as they come out of the ground on damp or rainy nights. These and many other worms live in rich soil throughout the U.S.
You can catch them while digging in loose earth or by searching the ground by flashlight on a rainy night. These worms are great bait for catfish, panfish and bass.
