Louisiana Pearlshell Mussel(Margaritifera hembeli)

Quick Facts

  • Size Range: 3 inches
  • Native Species?: Yes

This rare freshwater mussel is only found in two parishes in Louisiana, Grant and Rapides, causing it to be on the threatened list. They prefer clear, flowing water and stable gravel bottom. They are dark brown and can grow to 3 inches.

They are filter feeders and therefore very sensitive to pollution and turbidity caused by natural and man-made disturbances. This makes them a key species to monitor, and the LDWF keeps a close watch on mussel populations because they can be an indicator of problems with water quality.
