Independence Island is one of the largest artificial limestone reefs projects in state history. Situated three to four feet underwater, the submerged sland is one of the most popular speckled sea trout fishing sites in the area. The original oyster reef that occupied the area has been gradually dying due to hurricanes and coastal erosion. The 8,000 tons of limestone dropped on the site as part of the artificial reef program are expected to sustain and expand the ecological trout hot spot for decades to come.
