Mike Fernett of Redfish Lodge in Louisiana is head over heels about using spinnerbaits for redfish.

Louisiana has some of the best inshore fishing in the world, and the versatility of the spinnerbait goes hand in hand. Redfish in Louisiana are caught in a wide variety of ways.

Topwater, crankbaits, poppin’ corks, jigs, spoons and flies are just a few of the popular ways to catch redfish. But out of all these choices, the spinnerbait is one of the best to use for hungry redfish.

The spinnerbait consists of a jighead and tail of your choice, coupled with the arm and spinnerblade of choice. This allows you to adapt your lures to conditions such as depth, vegetation and current.

These baits can be fished fast, slow, deep or shallow, and the blade puts off a fish-attracting vibration. This can be a big help in stained or dark waters like Louisiana’s. Redfish and trout can detect these vibrations with their lateral line, same as they do for a struggling baitfish, and then they can track it down and crush it.

Changing the weight of the jighead and the size of the blade can make these lures perform under any condition. You can use a 1/16-ounce head for shallow water over the seagrass or fish the deep holes with current using a full one-ounce leadhead. The jig is removable from the spinnerbait arms for quick changes.

So load up on spinnerbaits and head to Louisiana to experience the finest redfishing you will ever see.
